Buildings of the dadaist architect Marcel Iancu

Remarkable Romanian and Israeli visual artist, architect, painter and art historian, Marcel Iancu (also spelled Janco) was the co-founder of Dadaism and a leading exponent of Constructivism in Eastern Europe. He emigrated to Israel in the second part of his life and later established an artists’ colony in Ein Hod – where he organized a diverse group of artists and craftspeople to settle among the ancient stone houses of the village.

National Theatre

Hated and mutilated by Ceausescu because of its totally un-communist look, now in its original Sombrero livery, the National Theatre looks better than ever.

The I.L. Caragiale National Theatre is located at kilometer 0 of the Capital, at the University Square, emblematic space which played a vital role in Romania’s profound change towards an open, participative society.

Magheru Boulevard modernist buildings

Part of the major thoroughfare than runs through the middle of Bucharest, Magheru boulevard is one of Europe’s most representative Modernist boulevards, where the Art Deco architecture en vogue in the 1930s is prevalent.

Telephone palace

One of the first Modernist buildings in interwar Bucharest and an iconic building of Romania’s capital city, the Telephone Palace is the result of a bold architectural dream to transform Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue) in a Romanian version of the famous Broadway.

ArCuB building: Bucharest's Art Deco gem

One of the Art Deco architectural style’s flagship Bucharest buildings today houses the Centre for Cultural Projects of the City of Bucharest, ArCuB. Located in the very heart of the city, on the narrow yet very busy Batistei Street (near the Bucharest National Theatre), the building showcases the quintessence of the Art Deco style, which put its mark on Bucharest’s architecture in the inter-war period.

Ioanid Garden

This stylish yet very small park is located in a quiet neighborhood, surrounded by beautiful old Neo-Romanian villas from the 1920s and never affected by communist demolitions. The perfect setting to end this architectural tour!

 Bucharest Architecture Tour

Tradition, Modernism & Beauty

In the 150 years since Bucharest has stopped burning to the ground, the architecture of the place usually followed the styles en vogue in the European capitals, with a local touch. French Beaux Arts style brought in by the alumni of the great Parisian academy, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Neo-Romanian together with communist style, form a mix that’s both frustrating and intriguing.

We’ll start this walking tour from the Jewish Quarter, where we’ll see the great modernist buildings designed by Marcel Iancu, we’ll walk along Magheru and Calea Victoriei boulevards and admire the slender lines and beautiful decorative elements of Art Deco and Modernist buildings, designed by the architects Arghir Culina, Horia Creangă and finish the tour in Romană Square area, where some the most important Neo Romanian buildings are located.

Join this walking tour and you’ll find all you need to know about the architecture of Bucharest!

I asked for a very specific tour of Romanian Orthodox churches and monasteries. Laura customized the itinerary and I was able to see everything that I wanted to see. She was extremely knowledgeable about the sites, was patient wanted to stay longer, etc. She also provided excellent recommendations on where to eat authentic Romanian food and purchase authentic icons. I highly recommend Laura as a tour guide.
